[English below]

How Do I Bend Backwards Without Hurting?

I get this question a lot.

Especially from people who practice Yoga. Backbends in Yoga are often a big concern. But there can be many occasions when we need to look up – at the movies, while talking to taller people, changing a light bulb or inspecting the ceiling.

How do you look up without straining your neck and lower back?

It’s a simple question of where in your spine you start your bending.

Your head and spine are remarkably flexible. In the first seven vertebrae of your neck, you can count 36 different joints. That’s a lot of joints!

When you do a backbend – where do you start?

Most people start lower down in their neck, or even in their lower back – this is how you can cause more discomfort. You don’t do it deliberately of course – why would anyone cause themselves harm intentionally?

It happens because the image of your head is inaccurate.

Ask a person to draw a picture of their head, and you often end up with an emoji – the eyes being shown at the top of the head. However, the eyes are at the bottom of your head. Your head – which houses your brain – begins above your eyes, above your ear holes.

It is much larger than you imagine, rising higher than you believe.

If you are in a public place now – look up and notice how much space there is above people’s eyes. Eyes are not the top of their head – there are far down, almost midway.

In fact, our face hangs below most of our head. Your spine runs up behind your face! Because of this, most people look up by thinking of moving their face first. It’s logical, but it means you bend your spine from the lower vertebra first.

Instead of that, bend your head back by starting at the very, very top joint. This is the joint behind your nose. Move your true head back – i.e. the part that houses your brain – by moving first at this joint just between your ear holes.

It will make a remarkable difference to your backbends; and to looking up.

You start with your head, then let the spine follow.

If you want a demonstration of this – come along to BodyChance and ask. Say “I want to do a backbend” and your BodyChance Trainer can show you a whole new way that is much easier to move.

You can do that at any of the Introductions we run at our studios in Tokyo and Osaka.
